Gestational Diabetes Clinic
Specialist care for you and your baby, throughout pregnancy and beyond
Being diagnosed with gestational diabetes can feel overwhelming. Getting the right advice and support early can make a significant difference to how confidently you manage the rest of your pregnancy.
Living Diabetes & Endocrinology's Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM) Clinic is WA's first private Endocrinologist-led multidisciplinary GDM clinic, bringing your specialist diabetes care together in one place.
Your care is provided by a coordinated team of Endocrinologists, Shona Vigus, Nurse Practitioner and Credentialled Diabetes Educator, and Andrea Dinkelmann, Accredited Practising Dietitian.
Together, we develop a personalised plan for your pregnancy and support you from diagnosis through to delivery and after your baby is born, while working closely with your GP and obstetric team.
One specialist team. One personalised plan for you and your baby.
What is gestational diabetes?
Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is diabetes first diagnosed during pregnancy. It occurs when your body cannot produce enough insulin to meet the increased needs of pregnancy, resulting in higher blood glucose levels.
With appropriate management, most women with GDM go on to have a healthy pregnancy and a healthy baby.
Managing blood glucose levels is important for reducing the risk of complications for both mother and baby. Treatment may involve changes to nutrition and activity, regular glucose monitoring and, for some women, medication or insulin.
Our role is to give you the specialist care, practical advice and the ongoing support you need to manage GDM confidently.

Why choose the LDE Gestational Diabetes Clinic?
GDM requires timely assessment and ongoing monitoring. Our clinic is designed to provide rapid access to specialist care, with newly diagnosed patients seen within one week wherever possible.
Following your initial assessment and reviews with our nurse practitioner and dietician, your team will develop an individualised care plan for the remainder of your pregnancy.
Our service provides:
Rapid access following diagnosis
Endocrinologist-led specialist care
A coordinated multidisciplinary team
Individualised pregnancy nutrition advice
Regular telehealth support between appointment
Insulin initiation and ongoing adjustment when required
Communication with your GP and obstetric team
Postpartum follow-up and future diabetes prevention
A conveniently located Osborne Park clinic with two hours of free parking
The frequency of your appointments and check-ins will be tailored to your individual needs throughout pregnancy.
What can I expect?
Once we receive your referral, we aim to arrange your first appointment with Shona (nurse practitioner) within one week.
Shona will help you understand GDM, establish your blood glucose monitoring and targets, arrange NDSS registration and develop a plan for ongoing support.
You will also see Andrea (dietitian), who will assess your current diet and develop individualised nutrition strategies for your pregnancy, taking into account your food preferences, lifestyle and nutritional needs.
Your Endocrinologist will provide specialist medical oversight and review you as clinically required. If your glucose levels remain above target despite nutrition and lifestyle changes, your Endocrinologist can discuss and prescribe appropriate treatment, including insulin if required.
GDM can change as your pregnancy progresses, so regular contact with your team is an important part of your care.
You'll have regular telehealth check-ins with Shona to review your glucose levels, answer questions and make changes to your management when needed.
Andrea and your Endocrinologist remain involved as required, and the multidisciplinary team regularly reviews patient care together.
This means you have a team keeping a close eye on your diabetes throughout your pregnancy, rather than relying only on individual appointments.
Support throughout your pregnancy
What are the costs?
The cost of care will depend on the appointments and support you require.
Medicare rebates are available for eligible Endocrinologist and Nurse Practitioner consultations. Dietitian consultations may also attract a Medicare rebate when you have an eligible GP Chronic Condition Management Plan and we suggest you check if you are eligible for reimbursement under your private health insurance.
Our team can explain anticipated costs and applicable Medicare rebates when arranging your appointments.
Care after your baby is born
Our care doesn't finish at the birth of your child.
Women who have had gestational diabetes have a significantly increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes later in life, making follow-up after pregnancy particularly important.
We'll help you prepare for:
Your 6–12 week postpartum oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT)
Review of your results
Ongoing screening for type 2 diabetes
Nutrition and lifestyle strategies for your future health
Preparation for future pregnancies
Understanding your risk of GDM in another pregnancy
Ongoing care with your GP
An Endocrinologist review is planned at approximately three months after delivery to review your results and establish a longer-term screening and prevention plan.
Our goal is not only a healthy pregnancy and baby, but to help protect your health well beyond pregnancy.
Referring to the Gestational Diabetes Clinic
If you've recently been diagnosed with gestational diabetes, ask your GP, obstetrician or GP obstetrician for a referral to the Living Diabetes & Endocrinology GDM Clinic.
Referrers can address referrals to the “LDE GDM Service” and include a copy of your Oral Glucose Tolerance Test (OGTT) results.
Once received, our team will triage the referral and contact you to arrange your initial appointments, with the aim of commencing care within one week.
For appointments and referrals, contact Living Diabetes & Endocrinology on 08 6374 6438.
